Both Sides Now: Platform Edition

Perspectives on platform engineering from both the platform team and the teams they serve.

Platform engineering has become one of the hottest topics in our industry, but most discussions focus on the platform team’s perspective. I’ve been fortunate to experience both sides - building internal platforms and being a consumer of platform services - and the view is quite different depending on where you’re standing.

This talk explored that dual perspective. What does a platform team think they’re providing, and what do consuming teams actually experience? Where do the gaps appear, and what can both sides do to close them? I drew on experiences from Sky Betting & Gaming and Meta, where the scale of platform challenges forced us to think carefully about these dynamics.

It was good to be back speaking in Leeds - Yorkshire DevOps always brings a pragmatic crowd who are dealing with these challenges day-to-day.
